Saab 9-4X Hits the Ring - Interior Shot Caught

The serious business has begun for the development of the new Saab 9-4X after it was caught entering the Nurburgring circuit in Germany by the good folks at Bridgetogantry.com presumably to do a bit of high speed testing on the new SUV.

The base for the new model will be General Motors' mid-size SUV Theta platform which is currently used for the Saturn Vue and Opel Antara, but it will be heavily revised to a more premium level and will be shared with the Cadillac BRX/SRX.

Sources have claimed this particular prototype has a 284 horsepower V6 engine under the hood mated to an automatic gear box. The dimensions of the model stand at a length 495cm and 192cm wide bringing an estimated kerb weight to around 2180kg.

Styling follows the same theme as the 9-4X BioPower Concept with the aggressive half oval grille remaining intact, but obviously the overall profile of the vehicle had to be heavily toned down for production.

It should makes its world debut at next year's Detroit Motor Show before production commences at the GM factory in Mexico. All Photos

FOLIATEC Sets World Record Film Fitting Time on Audi R8

blogspot.com-->From the Fastest Production Car or the Most Consecutive Skateboard Frontside Ollies to the Longest Ear Hair, it seems world records can be had for just about anything. Nonetheless, they hold an element of fascination which keeps people wondering if, one day they will ever be able to claim their own world record. Well, Foliatec in cooperation with professional film fitters folioCar have taken their piece of the world record dream with the absolute world best time on 5th June for fitting a whole vehicle with designer films.

Carried out under the supervision of international press members at the TUV premises in Mendig, Germany, a team of four folioCar technicians danced around each other and the Abt supplied Audi R8 in applying the deceptively real looking carbon fiber plastic film in exactly 2 hours, 25 minutes and 16 seconds. Typically, a normal car body needs two full working days to fit, no less a complex shape like the R8. “Although we could have had more people work on the fitting, it was already pretty tight around the vehicle and the extra people would only have got in the way,” explains Marco Kimme of folioCar. For further details regarding the arduous process involved in applying the film, see press release below.

2009 Ford focal point RS official: With 280 PS 2.5 liters turbine wheels!

These are the first official images of the all-new Ford Focus RS, a pre-production version of which will be shown at the 2008 London Motor Show in late July. The Focus RS, shown here lightly camouflaged while undergoing performance and durability testing at the challenging Nürburgring Circuit in Germany, will enter the European market in early 2009.

The all-new Focus RS features a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.5-litre engine, based on Focus ST, but significantly revised to generate over 280PS and more than 400 Nm of torque. Power will transferred to the front wheels, with a limited slip differential helping to get those 280PS on to the road. Further technical details of the all-new Focus RS will be released closer to launch.

Jost Capito, whose Team RS development group were responsible for the first generation Focus RS in 2002, and more recently, the Fiesta ST and the new Focus ST, said: “The new Focus RS is as much a car for driving enthusiasts as the one before it and classic Ford RS models of the past. We’re staying true to the core RS principles of a no-compromise, affordable high performance road car you can live with. The new Focus RS will have the muscles, heart and soul of a genuine RS and will be exciting to drive every day.”

“We have no doubt that we can enhance the acclaimed qualities of the already excellent Focus for an even higher performance model than the ST,” Capito added. “Now, we are going through the rigorous job of proving out our technical approach in extensive testing and tuning over a variety of roads including the most demanding track in the world, the “Green Hell” that is the Nürburgring Nordschleife!”

“With two consecutive Manufacturers’ World Rally Championship titles and the success of Fiesta and Focus ST models, we have the knowledge and the experience. The time is right for Ford to deliver a new high performance model for the legions of loyal Ford RS customers around Europe,” Capito concluded.

Receives cordially new Mondeo Coupé curve

Ford is taking the Mondeo to the max, with an all-new coupé version offering Mercedes CLS looks for half the price.

The forthcoming Vauxhall Insignia is set to raise the style stakes in the class, while the Volkswagen Passat CC has proved there really is demand for four-door coupés. So the time is right for the ultimate evolution of Ford’s family car to take a bow.

But the Coupé’s arrival also coincides with the blue oval’s increased European profitability. The company’s formula of good looks and strong driver appeal has been so successful on cars such as the standard Mondeo and S-MAX people carrier that confidence among bosses is currently at an all-time high.

Upcoming products such as the new Fiesta and Ka – plus the Capri (Issue 1,010) – will continue this philosophy. The Mondeo Coupé’s role is to sit at the very top of the range, as a desirable flagship. And it has some talented machinery in its sights, including the likes of the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class. The foundations have already been laid down by the latest-generation Mondeo, so the Coupé can offer an even more desirable mix of looks, driving dynamics and luxury.

As you can see from these pictures, the newcomer is a leap forward in design terms over the current car. Inspired by the Iosis concept – which previewed the Mondeo back in 2005 – it features a rakish roofline that slopes sharply over the heads of the rear passengers, plus a host of dramatic lines.

Striking details include a larger lower grille with enormous, chrome-ringed triangular air intakes. Bold extended wheelarches and muscular shoulder lines give it an athletic stance.

A full hatchback tailgate ensures practicality is a strength, while inside, the cabin will feature a spacious and luxurious four-seater layout, with twin individual chairs for rear passengers.

Up front, an evolution of the standard Mondeo’s dashboard design is expected, with hi-tech equipment including the latest touchscreen sat-nav package. This comprises programmable driver settings, and will be offered alongside Bluetooth wireless phone technology, a docking station for MP3 players and a keyless go system. Under the skin will be a mildly updated version of the Mondeo’s suspension set-up, with electronically controlled dampers giving the driver the option of Sport and Comfort modes. This will allow the Coupé to combine agile, sporty handling with excellent refinement at cruising speeds.

Engines will be sourced from the top end of the Mondeo line-up, and will include the new 175bhp 2.2-litre diesel from the Titanium X Sport model and a turbocharged 217bhp 2.5-litre petrol five-cylinder.

There is the possibility that the car will get the option of Ford’s new Powershift double-clutch gearbox, in addition to the conventional six-speed manual transmission fitted as standard.

Also, there are rumours that, as with the Insignia, the Coupé will be available with a new four-wheel-drive system, as well as stop-start technology to cut CO2 emissions and boost economy. While Ford has yet to confirm the Mondeo Coupé officially, buyers can expect the car to appear in around 2011, with prices from £25,000.

IN DETAIL: BMW 7-SPEED M-DOUBLE CLUTCH TRANSMISSION

BMW M GmbH is proud to be the world’s first car maker now offering a seven-speed Double Clutch Gearbox specially conceived and designed for a high-speed power unit. Compared with all conventional systems available so far, this new gearbox ensures an optimum gearshift and even more dynamic acceleration, and at the same time reduces fuel consumption by a significant margin.

The new M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic shifts gears without the slightest interruption in the flow of power, thus promoting both the sports driving experience and gearshift comfort for the driver. In its gearshift characteristics, the new M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic is ideally matched to the fast-revving V8 power unit in the new BMW M3. Making its debut in the BMW M3 Coupé and the BMW M3 Convertible, the new transmission helps to provide even faster and more dynamic acceleration.

Given these qualities, the seven-speed Double Clutch Gearbox offers particularly the sporting and ambitious driver an attractive alternative to the six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard. Maintaining a permanent flow of power from the engine, reducing gear increments to a minimum and using dynamic torque surge when shifting gears, the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic ensures a truly sporting experience at all times when shifting gears, whether in the automatic or manual mode.

A further essential point is that Drivelogic exclusive to BMW M with its five shift programs in the D- and six shift programs in the S-mode gives the driver the opportunity to tailor his BMW M3 individually to his personal style of motoring.

An even faster and more comfortable gearshift is ensured by the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic both in the automated (D-) mode and when driving in the manual (S-) mode.

The process of shifting gears is basically the same as on BMW’s proven Sequential M Gearbox, meaning that even when shifting gears manually there is no need for a clutch peddle and the driver may keep the accelerator fully depressed during the shift process.

To activate the D- or S-mode and to shift to reverse, the driver first has the choice of the new sports shift lever exclusive to the BMW M3, enabling him to shift gears himself in the S-mode. In this case he moves the gearshift lever only along one line, in a sequential process.

2009 Audi A7

Audi continues its quest to fill every possible niche in the motoring universe with this new A7 that arrives in 2009. CAR Online's artist's impression is based on the official design sketch we smuggled out of Ingolstadt last year (red car pictured) and reveals the new four-door coupe that will be shown at the Frankfurt motor show 2009.

Should we believe the marketing claims of four-door coupes? Essentially, they are slinkier, less practical, lower-roofed saloons – hardly cut 'n' thrust two-door sports cars. Whatever you call them, they're all the rage – with Merc enjoying success with its gangsta CLS, Jag continuing its low-slung theme with the XF and VW now muscling in at the budget end of the market with the Passat CC. BMW too is planning a four-door GT based around the Concept CS.

X-Wave Technology Concept from Visteon 3M

With the foundation laid in January 2008 for two Fortune 500 companies to combine their expertise and develop consumer-driven automotive products, Visteon and 3M have revealed a jointly developed project, called the X-Wave Concept. Using the BMW X5 as the host vehicle, it includes over 50 of the newest technologies designed to improve the driving experience of future vehicles.

Known as Human Machine Interface (HMI) solutions, the overall objective is to enhance user friendliness in regards to connectivity of portable devices, such as mobile phones and MP3 players, improve interior comfort and enhance the visual experience with touch and lighting effects.

One of the most interesting of these innovations is Visteon’s Integrated Center Panel. By using Proximity Sensing and Haptic Controls, the thin touch panel at first appearance has a “dead-front” look showing a smooth panel with no visible buttons. However, when the panel senses a hand coming close, it automatically illuminates from within the panel revelaing the climate, audio and multimedia controls. When a button is pushed, it sends back haptic feedback - a tactile vibration like a pulse. Such a response from the buttons give a more natural feel as well as provide feedback to the user that the input is being processed.

Through the use of transmissive optical films, a 3M specialty, the 3-D Driver Information Cluster increases the visibility of icons and graphics which allow simultaneous display of multiple images with greater depth and customization compared to existing 3-D products on the market.

See press release below for more innovations।
